Katonha Twins Sue Koala Park: The Public Reacts to the Seke Road Stench

Twin brothers Farai Lawyer and Tendai Mayor Katonha have officially approached the Harare Civil Court seeking an interdict against Koala Park abattoir over an unbearable stench and blinding dust. But while the courts prepare to hear the case, the court of public opinion is already in full session—and Zimbabweans are fiercely divided.

Traffic and dust on a Zimbabwean highway
“A genuine health hazard, or an attack on local industry? The public weighs in on the Koala Park relocation.”

"This is the point where innovation should take priority over litigation. Instead of rushing to sue, there is a far greater opportunity to capitalize on the problem itself... transform it into an opportunity."
Tendai Greg Makoni (Public Commentator)

The Public Verdict

The Katonha twins have cited Koala Park, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), and the Ministry of Health, claiming the relocation of cattle pens has created a severe public health hazard.

"Someone Had To Do It"

Many commuters agreed with the twins. Aiden Fellow stated: "Panonhuhwa zveshuwa, someone had to stand up and highlight the problem because it's not normal." Maisiri Ndinotenda and Freddy Chiringa echoed this, thanking the twins for finally taking action.

Zoning Questions

The debate also sparked questions about urban planning. Evans Mzerengi and Gilbert Chimwamwa questioned whether the area around the abattoir was even approved for residential purposes in the first place.

A massive portion of the online reaction criticized the lawsuit, pointing out the irony of complaining about cow dung while living in areas with severe municipal sanitation failures.

Public Sentiments: Job Protection Sewage Ignored Anti-Litigation

The Raw Sewage Argument

Adelmar Munava struck a chord, stating: "They are happy to live harmoniously with sewer but can’t endure passing through a cattle dung odour?" Ndoro Baba Tana and Maodza Brian agreed, challenging the twins to first sue over the raw sewage flowing in Chitungwiza streets.

Defending Livelihoods

Others defended Koala Park's economic contribution. Jossy Mai Overseer Buka argued that the lawsuit threatened one of the few surviving local industries, reminding the public of the hundreds of jobs at stake. Simbarashe Chinyoka questioned why organic odour was being prioritized over the livelihoods that survive through the abattoir.

While the smell grabbed the headlines, drivers highlighted a much more immediate, physical danger caused by the relocated cattle pens.

Blinding Highway Dust

Ladslous Govere brought attention to a critical safety issue: "Do you know that those cows raise serious dust to the point that night vision when driving is impaired?" Bells Willard supported this, demanding the lawsuit include the unsettling dust that creates a severe accident risk for motorists on Seke Road.

True to form, Zimbabwean social media found the humor in the situation, largely fixating on the twins' incredibly authoritative middle names.

What's in a Name?

Users like Brendah With An H, Chantelle C Keta, and Mazibisa Shepherd Sindiso were highly amused. "I’m here for the second names: Lawyer and Mayor!" laughed Brendah. "Being twins as adults is childish," joked Chris CL Nyenya in a classic display of internet banter.

The Airplane Joke

Odicious Innocent Dzamara took the humor to the skies, joking that the smell is so bad it reaches commercial flights: "I was on a plane landing and thought there was a sellout on board... the whole plane had to cover their noses. One day the pilots will faint and kill us all right there!"

Innovate, Don't Just Litigate

As commentator Tendai Greg Makoni noted, every challenge presents a gap in the market. While the community fights over pollution, forward-thinking individuals are investing in self-reliance and clean energy solutions.
