"The Labor of the Foolish": Apostle Joshua Selman Unveils the Cost of Ignorance in Ministry

Adapted for: Leaders Mandate | Focus: Ministry Excellence & Leadership

In a profound session at the SOAR Conference, Apostle Joshua Selman delivered a piercing masterclass on the realities of spiritual leadership. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 10:15, he revealed that when a leader does not know "how to go to the city," it is the followers who suffer the weariness of his ignorance.

“The labor of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.” — Ecclesiastes 10:15

"An excelling life of glory, beauty, color, and excellence is every believer's heritage in Christ. But the Word cannot profit a people if it is not mixed with faith, and faith is a product of understanding. You cannot obey an instruction you do not understand." — Apostle Joshua Selman

The Blueprint for Ministry Excellence

Apostle Selman highlights 2 Chronicles 15:3 to explain why churches, businesses, and entire nations fail. For a long season, Israel suffered because they lacked three fundamental pillars.

The True God

Every territory that experiences spiritual and economic decadence first loses the knowledge of the True God. Without a genuine revelation of God, idolatry and compromise take over the pulpit.

A Teaching Priest

God gives pastors according to His heart to feed the people with knowledge and understanding (Jeremiah 3:15). If a leader lacks the capacity to teach and build systems, the congregation will remain stagnant. You cannot delegate the role of being the visionary teacher.

The Law (Systems & Structures)

The absence of laws, boundaries, and administrative structures turns any ministry into chaos. "A city without walls" is how the Bible describes a man without rule over his spirit. Institutional excellence requires order.

Many leaders are stuck in the phase of merely "gathering crowds." Apostle Selman warns that drawing a crowd is not the ultimate proof of leadership.

Harnessing Potential

Real leadership begins when you transition from gathering men to harnessing and coordinating their potentials. God does not send you perfect people; He sends raw material. The anointing on your life must have the capacity to process them into refined tools for the Kingdom.

Premature Exposure

Do not expose people to platforms before they are built. Just as Jesus told His disciples to "Tarry in Jerusalem until ye be endued with power," leaders must have the patience to build their people before deploying them.

“The labor of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.” — Ecclesiastes 10:15

Apostle Selman unveiled the core psychological needs that every human being has. If a church or ministry fails to meet these needs, people will eventually leave, regardless of the anointing on the pulpit.

1. The Need for Security

People naturally gravitate toward environments where they feel safe. This isn't just physical security; it is emotional, financial, and spiritual security. A leader must create a safe haven where members' vulnerabilities are not weaponized against them.

2. The Need for Variety (Creativity)

Human beings despise monotony. Presenting the gospel and managing church affairs requires creativity. If a ministry does not evolve in its approach, members will suffer from spiritual fatigue.

3. The Need for Significance

Never downplay a follower's contribution. "The words 'Please' and 'Thank You' are miracles in leadership," Selman noted. A leader must make people feel that their presence matters.

4. The Need for Love & Acceptance

Rejection is the deepest wound a human can carry. People will endure a leader's flaws if they are convinced the leader genuinely loves them. An authentic atmosphere of love and acceptance is more magnetic than the most eloquent sermon.

Equip Yourself & Your Ministry

True leadership is a continuous journey of learning, impartation, and building sustainable systems. Don't be the leader whose "labor wearies the people."
