As modest and unassuming as ever, Antony Gasani has been a powerhouse in the Zimbabwean music industry for over two decades. Today, he is the man credited with engineering one of the biggest revivals in modern Sungura. Taken from Sugar Sugar’s latest album, "Kusvika Ati Eke", the hit track "Mudododo" has ignited a massive social media challenge, proving that the synergy between a veteran artist and a master producer can still break the internet.
Unmasking Antony Gasani
Born into a musical family 50 years ago, Gasani's calling began in Grade Seven, inspired by his father, Robert Gasani, a guitarist, and his supportive mother, Cecilia. While he initially pursued theological studies, his passion for music ultimately won out.
Reflecting on his career, which began in earnest in 2005 at Grammar Records under the mentorship of Wallace Mparutsa, Gasani remains humble. “It has been 21 years of music production, but sometimes we are not recognised despite all the efforts we put in,” he shared. “At Gart Studios, I deal with serious musicians only... Sugar Sugar is one of the veteran musicians I have enjoyed working with, and that guy is super talented.”
What Exactly is "Mudododo"?
As scores of people join the challenge, many have paused to explore the actual meaning behind the word "Mudododo."
According to the veteran musician himself, "Mudododo" refers to something exceptionally nice and delicious. In a deeper cultural explanation, he revealed that the term is derived from a sweet, nut-like product extracted from the seeds of the mupfura tree (marula tree).
Metaphorically, the song represents the "sweetness" of money and wealth that comes from hard work and utilizing Zimbabwe's rich resources.
